Migration to a Data Center approved license type

As most of you are aware, in September 2018, Atlassian® revamped its approach to the apps used in large-scale, clustered Data Center environments and introduced a Data Center approved apps program to ensure Marketplace apps maintain a high level of availability and consistent performance at scale.

Continue on the journey of building an enterprise-grade quality of apps, Atlassian® a few primary areas of investment: quality, performance, and security.

What this means for you
As part of the launch, Atlassian® made sure that you were able to continue running a Server app license with your Data Center instance and so that you could plan for these upgrades properly.

Remind you that beginning 03 Sep 2019, you will need to upgrade to a Data Center approved app if the license start date of your app renewal is 03 Sep 2019 or later and there is a Data Center version of the app available in the Marketplace.

For customers running Server apps on a Data Center instance,
  • Where there is not a Data Center approved version of the app: These customers will be able to continue running the Server version of the app until a Data Center approved version of the app is introduced. You will notice that these will be marked as “Not DC Compatible“ in the Universal Plugin Manager (UPM) as they have not been through the Data Center Review Process.
  • Where there is a Data Center approved version: The next time the customer renews an app with a license start date on or after 03 Sep 2019, the customer will be required to purchase a Data Center approved license. In the case of multi-year deals, they can continue to run until the multi-year renewal is up and a new start date is in place and is on or after 03 Sep 2019.

Will the customer need to immediately upgrade to a Data Center version of the app? Will their app stop working as soon as the Data Center app is introduced?
The app will not immediately stop working unless the customer tries to upgrade to a Data Center version on a Server license. In this case, they can rollback to the previous version of the app if they want to keep running the existing version. Also, in some cases it will be impossible to upgrade to the Data Center version depending on the version of the host product they have.
  • For customers who want to upgrade to the Data Center version of the app: They will need to purchase new Data Center licenses for their apps if they want their apps to work.
  • For customers who don’t want to upgrade to the Data Center version of the app: They should co-term all their apps with their host product, and plan their move to a Data Center app license when the existing licenses lapse.
